Justin Fields lost his starting job with the Chicago Bears to No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams , though he doesn't appear bitter in the least as the rookie struggles to find his footing in the NFL . Quite the opposite, Fields was highly supportive of his successor in the Windy City when speaking with Chantz Martin of Fox Sports on Wednesday, September 18.

"I think he's going to be fine," Fields said of Williams . "It's his second game. He just got done playing.

He's talented. He has all the talent in the world. They drafted him No.

1 overall for a reason." Troy Taormina-Imagn Images Fields added that the teammates around Williams, who he knows well and from whom he earned buy-in over his three years in Chicago, are also driven to succeed -- which should improve the rookie QB's chances of succeeding at a higher level sooner than later. "It's just not him, but he's going to get most of the blame just because of the position he's in," Fields added.

"But just as a whole ...

the guys over there I know ...

they want to be better, and I think they're going to be better." Fields went on to say that the level of competition has also played a factor in Williams' early struggles. "[Williams] played two pretty good defenses coming out, so I think he'll be fine," Fields said.

Williams has completed just 56.1% of his passes for 267 yards and 2 INTs across two games played. He has also rushed the football 10 times for 59 yards and taken 9 sacks behind what has proven thus far to be porous offensive line.

The rookie QB has yet to account for a touchdown as a member of the Bears. Meanwhile, a calf injury to Russell Wilson thrust Fields into the starting role with the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1. He has since led the team to a 2-0 record, winning both games on the road, and is scheduled to start the home opener this weekend against the Los Angeles Chargers .
