Prayagraj: Justice Yashwant Varma – the Delhi high court judge , who finds himself at the centre of controversy after unaccounted cash was found at his bungalow -- was earlier a lawyer at Allahabad high court and also served as a chief standing counsel for the UP govt between 2012 and 2013, when Samajwadi Party was governing the state. He was later elevated as a judge of the Allahabad high court in 2014 and transferred to Delhi high court in 2021. Justice Varma belongs to a family of legal luminaries and the son of former Allahabad high court judge late Justice AN Varma and nephew of renowned senior advocate late SN Varma.
His ancestral house at Elgin Road in Civil Lines is a famous address in the city. Born on Jan 6, 1969 in Prayagraj, he studied B Com (Honours) at Hansraj College at Delhi University and obtained his LLB degree from Madhya Pradesh's Rewa University. He got himself enrolled as an advocate on Aug 8, 1992.
He practised mainly on the civil side handling varied nature of matters relating to constitutional, industrial disputes, corporate, taxation, environment and allied branches of Law. He was also the special counsel for the Allahabad High Court from 2006 till his elevation. He also served as chief standing counsel for the state of UP from March 2012 till Aug, 2013.
Thereafter, he was designated as a senior advocate by the Allahabad HC. He was elevated as an additional Judge on Oct 13, 2014. Later, he took oath as a permanent judge on Feb 1, 2016.
Subsequently, he was transferred to the Delhi HC on October 11, 2011..
