Why do recycling programs limit how many electronic devices individuals can recycle? Nichole Millage, environmental sustainability specialist for Champaign Public Works, says that at least in Illinois it’s a legal limit. The Consumer Electronics Recycling Act “establishes a statewide system for recycling and/or reusing a set of electronic devices that are unwanted by Illinois residents,” Millage said. “The electronics’ manufacturers are required to participate in the management of these devices.

” The upcoming Countywide Residential Electronics Collection event on Oct. 12, which will be open to anyone who lives in Champaign County, limits households to a max of four televisions and seven total devices. It also has a limit on how many households can participate but Millage says that’s due to wait times.

This spring, she said, those times got pretty long due to having too many people signed up to donate in the time available. ”We now know exactly the number of participants we can allow to register,” Millage said. Spots are already going quickly, though; Millage said 450 spots were available on Wednesday and by Thursday, that was down to 400.
