Junior hockey: WarHawks beat Blizzard in overtime thriller

Jett Wheeler nets the game-winner of Wilmar’s 4-3 win over Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA — Jett Wheeler came up with the game-winner in overtime to lead the Willmar WarHawks to a 3-2 NA3HL victory over the Alexandria Blizzard on Wednesday at the Runestone Community Center. Wheeler, a 6-foot, 167-pound forward from Sauk Rapids, scored his third goal of the season at the 41-second mark of the extra period. He was assisted by Carson Wendorff, who recorded his fifth assist of the season.

Wendorff is a 5-11, 180-pound defenseman from Atwater who played for River Lakes High School. The WarHawks also got goals from Gabriel Adams and Timothy Vaculiki. It was Adams’ ninth goal of the season and Vaculiki’s first.



Dams is a forward from Bellevue, Nebraska. Vaculiki is a defenseman from Fallbrook, California. The teams played scoreless hockey through the first period.

Each team then struck for goals twice in the second period. After a scoreless third period, Wheeler came through with the winner. Kai Girard made 32 saves for the WarHawks, who were out-shot 34-30.

Willmar and Alexandria play again at 7:10 p.m. Friday at the Willmar Civic Center Arena.

The WarHawks also play the Minnesota Wilderness at 7:10 p.m. Saturday at the Willmar Civic Center Arena.
