Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri brought the tense first trailer from their new thriller After the Hunt to CinemaCon . Luca Guadagnino joined his castmembers to tease the Amazon MGM Studios film that also stars Julia Roberts and hits select theaters Oct. 10 before expanding the following week.
Hailing from Imagine Entertainment, After the Hunt focuses on a college professor (Roberts) who is forced to confront her own dark past when a prominent student (Edebiri) makes an accusation against one of her colleagues (Garfield). “I’ve wanted to work with Luca for 15, 20 years and finally we’ve gotten to do it,” Garfield told the crowd. He called Guadagnino’s work “sumptuous, sensual and life-affirming.
” Edebiri added, “This is a movie that’s built to see with other people to talk about and discuss and just feel.” The trailer shows Edebiri coming to Roberts to confide in her. “He crossed the line,” Edebiri says of Garfield’s character.
“He kept going after I said no.” In a later scene, Garfield tells Roberts, “I told her I suspected she plagiarized.” He went on to refer to the student as “this lying little fucking bitch.
” The trailer ends with Edebiri telling Roberts, “I don’t feel comfortable having this conversation with you anymore.” Roberts responds, “Not everything is supposed to make you feel comfortable.” Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny round out the cast.
Guadagnino helmed the movie from a script by Nora Garrett. Serving as producers are Guadagnino, Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody and Allan Mandelbaum. Imagine’s Mandelbaum brought the script to the production company and worked with CAA to land Roberts and Guadagnino.
After the Hunt reunites Guadagnino with Amazon MGM Studios, which released his Zendaya-led film Challengers last year. His other features as director include Call Me by Your Name (2017), Suspiria (2018), Bones and All (2022) and Queer (2024). Roberts’ recent film credits include the Universal romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise alongside George Clooney and last year’s Netflix thriller Leave the World Behind that co-starred Mahershala Ali and Ethan Hawke.
CinemaCon is the annual event for exhibitors and Hollywood studios that runs this year from March 31 to April 3. It is presented by Cinema United (formerly the National Association of Theatre Owners)..
