IN AN effort to bolster their collegiate and high school basketball teams for the upcoming 101st Season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers will be holding tryouts in Cebu for two days. Former Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) coach Edsel Vallena, who is now the assistant coach of JRU, said the tryouts will be held on Wednesday (April 9, 2025) from 9 a.m.
to 12 noon and on Thursday, April 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.
m. at the Capitol Parish Gym on Escario St., Cebu City.
JRU, the alma mater of former PBA star Vergel Meneses, is now under the leadership of Ernani “Nani” Epondulan, who took over as head coach in February this year. Epondulan replaced Louie Gonzalez, who led the team for six years. In the previous season, JRU finished last with a 4-14 record in the overall standings.
As a result, Epondulan is now aggressively recruiting players by holding tryouts in the provinces. Like Meneses, Epondulan is also a former JRU varsity player and was named Most Valuable Player during his playing years. Before becoming head coach of JRU, Epondulan was part of Randy Alcantara’s coaching staff at Mapua University, which won the Season 100 men’s basketball championship last year.
