Branthwaite after receiving an injury setback against Crystal Palace on 28 September [ ], but did not start for the Toffees until their 0-0 draw with West Ham on Saturday, 9 November. Buckland believes this could be because Dyche has been instructed not to take risks with the centre-back as there are plans to sell him in the January transfer window. “The thing with Branthwaite is Dyche is being told or Dyche wants it so whenever it happens that Branthwaite has to be fit in January just in case anybody comes in for him”, Buckland said on on Monday, 11 November.

Dyche would rather not start the England international for two games in October and November than risk not having him for the rest of the season. That, though, has not prevented him from receiving criticism, with for not starting the 22-year-old in Everton’s 1-0 loss to Southampton on 2 November. Branthwaite, meanwhile, has gone on international duty with England after helping the Merseyside-based club keep a clean sheet against West Ham in East London.
