Jose Mourinho has suggested Athletic Club might have ulterior motives for their Europa League journey. This comes after Rangers knocked Fenerbahce out of the competition. The Scottish side now face a two-legged quarter-final against Athletic Bilbao.
The first leg is set for Thursday, April 10, in Glasgow, with the return leg in Bilbao on Thursday, April 17. Despite his respect for the Scottish Premiership giants, Mourinho expects the Spanish side to progress. He said: "In football, anything is possible.
"But, I played against Bilbao in the league phase, and Bilbao is a stronger team. "And the final is in Bilbao. The road to Bilbao.
"I don't know what happened today with Roma, I just know that after 10 minutes, Roma were playing with 10 men. "So, honestly, I think if Rangers do it against Bilbao, it would be phenomenal because it's going to be very hard." Mourinho's comments suggest he believes Athletic Club’s success in the tournament might be motivated by the fact that the final is set to take place at their home ground.
However, he praised Rangers, admitting that their progression would be "phenomenal.".
