Johnson & Johnson told to pay ₹35 lakh each as compensation to hip implant victims

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay ₹35 lakh in compensation to each patient affected by a faulty hip implant. The commission also mandated an interest of 6% per annum on the compensation from the complaint filing date. The payment must be made within two months.

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ( NCDRC ) has directed Johnson & Johnson to pay ₹35 lakh in compensation to each of the patients who had approached it claiming to have adversely affected after receiving a faulty hip implant of the multinational pharmaceutical company. The compensation has to be paid within two months from the date of the judgement, it said.

Jennifer Bharucha , who filed a petition in 2012 on behalf of her mother seeking compensation, said her late mother had to undergo several revision surgeries due to the faulty hip implant that the company later recalled.
