John Wheeler: Frost is a rarity in Phoenix/Mesa

The official weather location at Phoenix has not recorded a temperature of 32 degrees or lower in a little over six years.

FARGO — Many people who have lived and, in particular, spent their winters in our region aspire to spend winters in the Phoenix/Mesa area in Arizona upon retirement. Apparently, there is something different about winters in the Phoenix area that is something of a draw. The Phoenix area is almost always sunny and never really cold.

It rarely even frosts in Phoenix. In fact, the official weather location at Phoenix has not recorded a temperature of 32 degrees or lower in a little over six years. Their last frost was on Jan.



2, 2019. Their longest run of weather without freezing was almost eight years, from Dec. 27, 1990, through Dec.

23, 1998. There was another five-year frost-free period from Nov. 23, 1979, until Jan.

31, 1985. The station record low is 16 degrees set Jan. 7, 1913.
