FARGO — Throughout the Dakotas and Minnesota, the average daily mean temperature during March is running about 7 degrees warmer than average. The average daily mean temperature is to split the difference between each day's low and high temperature and then average that over the entire month. This is compared to the average from 1991-2020, the most recent complete three decades, and this March so far is 7 degrees warmer than the three-decade average.
If is hasn't felt extraordinarily warm, that is because the 1991-2020 period contains many March months like this one but also many more that were much colder. Most of the colder March months had persistent snow. The warmest March since 1991 was in 2012 while the coldest was in 2023, when we thought the snow would never melt.
