John Wheeler: April weather is usually anything but nice

Our collective memories of extreme April weather are quite poor.

FARGO — April weather is frequently not nice. It usually snows in April and often snows several times during the month. April snow often falls after the last of the winter snow cover has melted away, making it seem like a second winter.

Sometimes it is very cold in April. It is usually below freezing for a few days in April and temperatures near and even below zero have occurred.April can also be very warm.

The date of the average first 70 degree day in is April and it has been known to reach the 80s and 90s and once, in 1980, it was 100 degrees. Warm April days are often very windy, and those warm and windy April afternoons are often extremely dry, producing desert-like conditions that are conducive to wildfires. Despite all of this, it seems our collective memories of extreme April weather are quite poor, as many of us are prone to exclaim that our extreme April weather is unusual even though it is not.
