WARRENSBURG—John Robert “Jack” Sweet, 82, of State Route 28 passed away peacefully, Tuesday, March 11th, 2025 at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born February 2nd, 1943, in Glens Falls, he was one of three children (and the only son) of the late Robert and Claire (née Fleming) Sweet. Jack was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Bolton Central School.
He joined the family business, Sweet Lumber Mill, from the moment he could walk, and had a long, fulfilling career. Always one to keep himself busy, Jack did not stop working even after he sold the mill to Cersosimo Lumber Co. in 2013, spending 3 more years at the mill before working for a longtime customer of Sweet Lumber, Dan Ellsworth.
Jack made many lifelong friends throughout his career, for only the price of one finger; it seemed impossible for him to leave the house without bumping into someone that he knew or making a new friend with his million-dollar smile. We rest assured knowing that he has the chance to catch up with many of these friends who have passed before him. Jack was a communicant of the Church of the Holy Cross in Warrensburg and active in the church community throughout his life.
He had the distinction of spending 50 years in the Church vestry, spending more than 20 years as a warden, and was a regular participant in the Church’s many different charitable events. Jack was also a member of the Masons for 60 years, a member of the Shriners International lodge, and part of a hunting club in Edinburgh (a club whose members curiously consisted entirely of non-hunters). In his free time, Jack was a prolific traveler, visiting many different states in his motorhome with his wife and family.
The great treasure of Jack’s life was his loving marriage to Mary C. Sweet and the family he raised with her. They met at Potter’s Diner and, as the story goes, asked her out on a bet.
They married on September 25th, 1964 at the Church of the Holy Cross. For 48 years, they adored and supported each other through all the joys and hardships of their life. Jack was by her side until the very end, when she passed on July 16th, 2013, after a graceful battle with pancreatic cancer.
He carried his love and memory for her until his final moments. In addition to his wife and parents, Jack is predeceased by his canine companion of 14 years, Marley. He is survived by his five children: Sharine Sweet of Saratoga Springs, Stephanie LaFond and her husband Paul of Warrensburg, Robert E.
