July 24, 1947—December 23, 2024 John August Westphal, age 77, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at the VA Medical Center in Nashville TN. John was born in Chesaw, WA on July 24, 1947, and grew up in Tonasket, WA where he attended and graduated high school. He attended Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake after high school.
John enlisted in the United States Navy following high school and college, where he served his country proudly for two tours in Vietnam. He subsequently spent 30+ years working in various capacities for Weyerhaeuser Company in Longview, WA. John’s passion and focus following his retirement centered on his involvement, sponsorship, and mentorship efforts within the AA community.
He cared deeply for those that he came to know through these programs, and he dedicated much of his time helping others, and in turn himself. John’s faith in God was profound, and he believed deeply in surrendering to a power greater than himself to guide him through his life. He is survived by his loving wife Patsy Risner; his brother Gordon Westphal; his two sons Jason and Justin Westphal; his stepdaughter and stepson Beth Lambert and Joel Lambert; his granddaughter Victoria Banuelos Westphal.
John was preceded in death by his father Gordon Westphal, his mother Donna Smith, and the mother of his sons Donna Rae Robinson. A celebration of life will be held April 12, 2025, at Shekinah Christian Center (1015 3rd Ave, Longview, WA 98632) at 2 p.m.
