John Aldridge: Manchester United’s owners need to show their legends some respect

Liverpool legend hits out at poor treatment for Manchester United's all-time greats John Aldridge with fellow Liverpool legends at the 2024 Forever Reds Christmas dinner Jim Ratcliffe and his advisers have made so many mistakes in their first year running Manchester United and I couldn’t believe it when it emerged they have removed £40,000 of funding they were providing to help the club’s former players. As chairman of Liverpool’s ex-players association Forever Reds, this decision left me speechless. Liverpool and United may be bitter rivals and the hatred between the fans at the clubs down the years has been there for all to see.

Yet I have great respect for United’s players from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s – and they will be the ones hit by decisions like this. Forever Reds is a thriving part of Liverpool FC and we have £300-400k in our kitty that can be used to help former players who run into health or other difficulties. Our annual Christmas dinner was a big success a couple of weeks back as loads of Liverpool legends supported the event and we raised more than £80,000 for the charity.

Then you hear United’s version of this organisation may be wound up because the club no longer wants to support it. It’s disgusting that a club of United’s stature can’t show some respect to their former players by giving them the support they are due. I’m glad to be associated with a football club that has a much bigger heart and respects the legends who put them where they are today.
