Joe Lycett has given a rare insight into his home life now he has become a dad. The Birmingham-born comic, 36, stunned fans when he announced last October that he had welcomed a baby boy with a mystery partner called Denise . Many had assumed that it was simply one of his infamous pranks, but it was indeed true.
Now, six months on, Lycett appears to have taken to fatherhood like a duck to water. “I love it. I’m in a very happy, golden era of my life right now,” he told Radio Times .
Suggesting he’s quite a hands on dad, he went on to describe the view from his sofa, saying there was “a pram and loads of nappies” in the room alongside his TV, an easel and his Baftas. He also revealed one way in which he and his partner enjoy spending quality time with their little one, telling the publication: “We’re also doing a lot of baby cinema [special screenings for adults and babies/young children]. Now it’s a family activity, it’s so fun.
” In November he addressed the initial sceptism from others about whether he really had a child, saying: “It's unexpected for me to have a baby because lots of people think of me as the gay bloke off the telly.” Eyebrows were further raised when he shared a picture of himself on Instagram craddling the newborn, with some determining he was in fact “holding a potato”. It was an emotional time however, with Lycett admitting that he spent a lot of the early days “crying” and catastrophising.
Speaking on the Parenting Hell podcast , he explained: “I've done a lot of, I mean less so now, but the first sort of two weeks I did a lot of crying because I did a lot of nostalgia for the future and imagined what he would be like when he was 20 and then worried about him when he's an old man and I can't be there for him.” The Late Night With Lycett star did experience one genuine moment of panic however when it appeared that something from his past could come back to haunt him and his new family. A historic prank saw Lycett change his name to Hugo Boss, in protest at the fashion brand's copyright war on small businesses using the word “boss” in their name.
'Talk about things coming back to bite you on the a***,” he told the Parenting Hell podcast with Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe . 'When we went to register his name the registrar said to me 'have you been known by any other names?' “I said 'no' then I looked over at my partner and she furrowed her brow and I went, 'oh yeah I was known as a Hugo Boss for a while.' “And she had to go into real granular detail and she said 'you got lucky because if you were Hugo Boss on your passport, we have to put that on his birth certificate the father is Joe Lycett, also known as Hugo Boss'.
“Fortunately the passport was rejected because my signature as Hugo Boss when I was Hugo Boss for that period was a c*** and balls so they rejected it. “It was just changed via Deed Poll.”.
