Srinagar, Jan 2: To combat quackery, medical malpractice and ensure quality healthcare, the J&K Medical Council has issued a strict warning to all doctors working here. The notice aims to empower patients with information about the doctor treating them. The notice issued by President J&K Medical Council, Prof S M Salim Khan mandates that all registered doctors, whether in government or private practice, display their registration numbers issued by the J&K Medical Council.
Government doctors have to sign, the name, designation, and registration number on prescriptions, clinical notes, investigation reports, and medical certificates. Private practitioners have to display recognised qualifications, honours, speciality, and registration numbers on prescriptions, certificates, and receipts. The council encourages doctors to include a QR code on their prescription pads, enabling patients to verify their credentials.
Medical practitioners have to also display legally attested copies of registered qualifications and permanent registration certificates at their private practice clinics and hospitals. Talking to Greater Kashmir, Prof Khan said that while upholding the high standards of professionalism by the qualified registered doctors working in J&K, there were instances wherein unqualified persons impersonating doctors indulged in quackery and unethical practices while dealing with gullible patients who trust these people. “The patients have the right to know the credentials of the treating doctor and his or her qualifications and the specialisation for who the patient approaches a particular medical expert,” he said.
The J&K Medical Council has warned that failure to comply with these regulations would result in disciplinary action. Khan emphasised the need to safeguard human lives and prevent breaches of professional conduct. The directive is a step towards implementing the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002, which aims to maintain the highest standards of professional conduct among medical practitioners.
By enforcing these regulations, the J&K Medical Council has expressed hope to restore public trust in the medical profession and ensure that patients receive quality care from qualified and registered doctors..
