Srinagar: The National Conference (NC) alliance touched the majority mark after it got support from four independent MLAs on Thursday days after the results for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections were announced. This marks a significant victory for the party, which has been a key political player in the region for decades. NC chief and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was unanimously elected as the head of the National Conference's legislative party.

National Conference leader Salman Sagar, who attended the meeting, said, "We have elected Omar (Abdullah) as the Leader, it was a proud and emotional moment for all of us. We are happy about it, it was a unanimous decision. In the next one or two days, he will stake claim to form govt.

Four Independents have also joined us." Farooq Abdullah announced that a meeting of the NC’s pre-poll coalition partners would be held on Friday to further discuss the formation of the government in Jammu and Kashmir. The NC has a comfortable majority in the Assembly along with their partners.

In the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections, which were held after a decade, the NC won 42 seats in the 95-member Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, making it the single largest party. With coalition partners Congress and CPI(M) winning six and one seats respectively, the alliance is in a strong position to form the next government with Omar Abdullah expected to be prime minister. Notably, Abdullah won both the Budgam and Ganderbal seats, a big recovery after his setback in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

As J&K prepares for a new government, Abdullah stressed the importance of a "healthy working relationship" with New Delhi. Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from Elections and around the world..
