THE LIMERICK senior footballers switch their focus to the start of the Tailteann Cup next month. Manager Jimmy Lee said it is a good time for his player to recharge their batteries.Recent Allianz Football League Division 4 winners Limerick suffered a 0-24 to 0-13 quarter-final defeat to Cork at the TÚS Gaelic Grounds on last Saturday evening.
The Shannonsiders Munster SFC campaign has now came to an end. “We have a lot of knocks and bruises and we need to get them right. The Tailteann Cup is where it is at.
We will focus hard at it. “I think the first game is around the 10th or 11th of May. Look, that will be the focus from here on,” said Limerick senior football manager Jimmy Lee.
The Newcastle West native feels his side after making progress. “We need to allow time for the lads to recharge the batteries. We will take time out as well to do that.
We have a plan set out as a management team and we will go after that plan then. We are making progress, there is no doubting that. I would be very happy with the entire squad, the way they are working at it, the way the management team are working at it.
“What happened out there tonight is probably a frustration in terms of if we were 15 v 15 we were confident. But look there is a plan in place, we'll focus on the Tailteann, we'll wait for the draw and see the hand of cards we are dealt and we will go from there.” Limerick played 45 minutes of the game with 14 players after Seán Clancy was dismissed having picked up two yellow cards.
“The lads went to the bitter end and they worked their socks off. At times you wouldn't even think there were 14 out there, you would think there was 15. We can never ask any more of them young lads, especially week four,” added Lee.
Wing back Tony McCarthy missed last Saturday's clash through injury. Jimmy Lee's side will aim to progress into the latter stages of the Tailteann Cup. Sligo defeated Limerick in the quarter-final of the Tailteann Cup last year.
The Tailteann Cup campaign begins on May 10/11. Limerick will be in action in round two onMay 17/18. The Shannnsiders will finish their group campaign on May 31/June 1.
