Jim Wright hits half-century as Waverley Cricket Club beat Hambledon by 45 runs

Waverley picked up an impressive 45-run win at Hambledon. Waverley’s Jim Wright (55) and Mike Tiley (ten) put on 45 for the first wicket, with Wright scoring his 10,000th run for the club. Ollie Hickman (three for 23) eventually bowled Wright and then two of the three Upward brothers as Simon Brewer (44) began to hit out.

A middle-order collapse to Hickman and Jamie McKenzie (two for 33) saw the visitors shaken but Wayne Torrey (43 not out) and Aiden Upward (26 not out) shored up the tail, adding 65 and enabling a score of 200 for seven to be posted on Hambledon’s postage stamp sized ground. After an excellent tea Hambledon’s reply started well and it looked as if they would get the required total with ease. Chase Pusey (45) and James Willoughby (36) were batting fluently and the first 50 came up easily.



A bowling change brought on Dan Litwin (two for 39), who soon induced Willoughby to offer a catch to Waverley skipper Toby Elborough. Hickman came in and scored a rapid 23 as the situation got worse for Waverley until Hickman was caught with the home side on 93. Wickets then started to tumble in quick session to Torrey (two for 24) and Adrian Day (three for 24) to completely change the face of the game.

McKenzie (21) put up a bit of a fight but it was in vain as wickets continued to tumble and Hambledon were bowled out for 155..
