The Jigawa State Government has announced plans to introduce free drugs for patients with diabetes, hypertension, and sickle cell disease across the state. The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdullahi Muhammad Kainuwa, disclosed this while interacting with newsmen in Dutse, the state capital, on Sunday.
Dr. Kainuwa revealed that Governor Umar Namadi has directed the presentation of a proposal for the implementation of the program, aimed at improving the health of low-income individuals. “The state government is committed to providing accessible healthcare services to its citizens, particularly those who cannot afford them,” he said.
The commissioner also stressed that more importantly on the current joint effort with the Jigawa State Ministry for Local Government and Community Development is to distribute essential drugs to vulnerable families across the state. “This initiative aims to increase access to healthcare services for those who need them most,” he stressed. Speaking further on the rationale behind the free healthcare program for diabetes, hypertension, and sickle cell patients will benefit thousands of residents in Jigawa State, Dr.

A contract will also be awarded for the procurement of equipment worth N600 million, further enhancing the state’s healthcare infrastructure. “The state’s healthcare development plans include expanding access to specialised care, improving healthcare infrastructure, and increasing the availability of essential drugs,” disclosed the commissioner. According to Dr.
Kainuwa, Jigawa State has completed the construction of dialysis centers in Dutse, Ringim, and Kazaure general hospitals. “By providing free healthcare services to vulnerable populations, the Jigawa State Government aims to improve health outcomes and reduce mortality rates. This initiative will also contribute to the state’s overall development and growth,” the commissioner emphasised.
However, he revealed that “Contracts will soon be awarded for the procurement of dialysis equipment for these hospitals before the end of the year. Free dialysis services are already available in Gumel and Hadejia general hospitals.” Kainuwa stressed that the introduction of free drugs for diabetes, hypertension, and sickle cell patients will significantly reduce the healthcare burden on low-income individuals.
