Jets' Upstart Linebacker Fined For Rookie QB Hit

Jamien Sherwood may be an up-and-coming linebacker in this league, but New York's star isn't absolved from fines.

The NFL has done everything they could to try and limit quarterback hits when they are running outside the pocket. Their latest attempt to push that fact comes at the expense of New York Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood. The sideline-to-sideline linebacker who is in the middle of a breakout season has drawn the ire of the league for one particular play.

Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images Sherwood was fined $6,354 for unnecessary roughness/use of helmet on a play that knocked New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye out of last Sunday's game with a concussion. The particular play saw Maye scrambling up the middle in the pocket and slid to try and avoid a hit. While Sherwood did not appear to hit Maye late (and was not called for a late hit after the play), the league found that the bang-bang play was something they should try and get out of the game overall.

Sherwood has been enjoying a breakout campaign for the Jets as the replacement for C.J. Mosley for most of the season.

The former safety turned linebacker out of Auburn has recorded 80 tackles, two sacks, six tackles for loss, and a pass defended. Related: Aaron Rodgers 'Waiting To Exhale'? He is considered one of the better coverage linebackers in the league so far. While the Jets are thrilled with the development of their fifth-round linebacker, the NFL made it clear Saturday afternoon that one play made by Sherwood was not acceptable.
