The Kansas City Chiefs signed kicker Spencer Shrader off the New York Jets practice squad on Thursday. Shrader is being brought in as a temporary replacement for Harrison Butker, who was placed on injured reserve this afternoon with a left knee issue. Butker will reportedly undergo surgery to trim his meniscus, and as a result, is expected to miss three-to-four weeks.

Shrader, who kicked collegiately at South Florida and Notre Dame, was actually promoted to the Jets' roster for last Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. He converted both field goal tries for New York's only points in a 31-6 loss and reverted back to the practice squad after the game. According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, the Jets attempted to prevent the Chiefs from poaching Shrader, but the rookie kicker picked Kansas City over Gang Green.

"The Jets, in an attempt to keep Shrader, did offer him a spot on the 53. He opted to go kick for an undefeated team, which is understandable," Cimini said . "However, it probably will be only a 4-game gig in KC (until Butker returns).

If he had stayed with the Jets, it might have turned into something longer. So they will go with [Anders] Carlson on Sunday. #Jets .

" Norm Hall/Getty Images Prior to getting injured, Butker converted 18-of-20 on field goals and 21-of-22 extra points this season. He made all three field goals and his lone extra point in last week's 16-14 win over the Denver Broncos. Shrader, meanwhile, will be thrust into a critical situation right away with the Chiefs.

Kansas City (9-0) will travel to 8-2 Buffalo this Sunday to take on the Bills in a possible AFC Championship Game Preview. Kickoff for that premier matchup is set for 4:25 p.m.

ET. CBS will broadcast the game, with Jim Nantz and Tony Romo on the call. Related: Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker To Reportedly Miss Significant Time.
