Jerod Mayo is unsure who will be the Patriots quarterback in Week 4 | Sporting News

The New England Patriots offense has looked putrid so far this season despite earning a win in the team's season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, mostly due to their rushing attack and defense. They scored 20 points in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks and just three in Week 3 against the New York Jets, and during the Thursday night battle at MetLife Stadium, the Patriots gave rookie Drake Maye his first shot to lead the team in the regular season. After Jacoby Brissett completed 12 of his 18 passes for 98 yards, Maye completed four of his eight for 22 in the final five minutes of the 24-3 loss.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was asked if he'll be making a quarterback change during this mini bye week, and his answer was an interesting one. "I don't know," Mayo said ( transcribed by Doug Kyed ). "We talk about it every single week, you're competing for a job.

We'll get together as a coaching staff." While this may seem like coach speak, Mayo has gone out of his way to back Brissett during his media availabilities since he was awarded the job, and this seems to lean toward the thoughts of a switch. Maye will also be under fire if the offensive line continues to look like this, so he'll likely be running for his life if he does start soon.

At the same time, he could provide a spark that the offense has desperately needed. MORE PATRIOTS NEWS Patriots budding star defender leaves on Thursday with injury Patriots safety suffers injury vs. Jets Patriots steal rookie defensive end from Bears Did Bill Belichick at where he wants to coach?.
