Jennifer Love Hewitt has revealed that the press knew about her mom’s death before she did. The 45-year-old star shot to fame in the ‘90s when she was just a teenager, starring in shows such as Party of Five and Kids Incorporated , as well as movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer . Jennifer’s mom, Patricia Hewitt, passed away from cancer in 2012 at age 67, and Jen — who was 33 at the time — opens up about her healing journey through the grief in her upcoming book, Inheriting Magic: My Journey Through Grief, Joy, Celebration, and Making Every Day Magical .
Per the Hollywood Reporter , Jennifer spoke about the day her mom died at a recent bookshop event in Los Angeles, and said that she’d been in Monaco for the 52nd Monte Carlo TV Festival. She was on a plane home when Patricia died, with Jennifer purportedly explaining at the event: “The part that I didn’t put in the book is that actually the press knew that my mom had passed before I did.” “The flight time with me getting back was so long,” she continued.
“It was, like, a 10-and-a-half-hour flight, so by the time I arrived, everybody knew, and it was such a weird thing for me.” Jennifer reportedly went on to say that this isn’t the only time that the media have been aware of things that were happening in her life before she was. “Later on, I was like: ‘But everybody’s always known everything about my life, kind of, before,’” she said.
“Even breakups, people have been like: ‘He was cheating on you already.’ Really, people? Like, why didn’t you tell me?!” Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter , Jennifer said that she’d not spoken about her mom’s death before because she “didn’t have the words,” but she hopes to honor her memory with the book. “I just didn’t know what to say, and this felt like the right time to talk about her and sort of say: ‘This is what she left behind,’" she shared.
And Jennifer explained that her book’s title, Inheriting Magic , references her mom’s ability to make everybody she met feel special. “I would be on a very successful television show, we would walk into a restaurant, and people couldn’t care less about me; that was my mother,” she said. “They wanted to know who was the woman that I was standing next to because she was light, she was joy.
She made friends with everyone. There was no stranger in the world to her whatsoever.” “If I had a broken heart or a bad day, she would put up Christmas lights because she believed that that sort of lifted the mood,” Jennifer added.
“If I had bad cramps, there were lights.” Jennifer referenced this attribute of her mom’s in a sweet Instagram tribute that she wrote on the 11th anniversary of her death, which read: “11 years ago my life changed in a moment. We didn’t get to say goodbye but I think it’s because we wouldn’t have known how.
” “I see you in my kids everyday. I feel you in things I say and smile because I’m more like you than I thought,” she went on. “I honor you by trying to create magic for my family just like you did for us.
I love you deeply. I’m so grateful you were our mom. This day will always hurt because you were that special.
