Jeju Hamdeok Green Hydrogen Station JEJU, Oct. 30 (Korea Bizwire) – Jeju Island announced on October 30 that it will begin the nation’s first commercial sales of green hydrogen at the Hamdeok Green Hydrogen Station in Hamdeok-ri, Jocheon-eup, Jeju City, starting December 1. The fuel will be available for hydrogen-powered passenger cars and buses.
Green hydrogen, produced by splitting water through electrolysis using renewable energy power, is considered a clean hydrogen source as it generates zero carbon emissions during production. The retail price has been set at 15,000 won per kg (including VAT). In terms of fuel efficiency, green hydrogen costs approximately 679 won per kilometer, making it more expensive than diesel (642 won) and electricity (316 won).
The Jeju Hydrogen Economy Committee determined the price after considering production and supply costs. While green hydrogen currently exceeds fossil fuel prices, the committee projects that expanding markets and technological advances will gradually lower both production costs and retail prices. As of this month, Jeju Island has a total of 58 hydrogen vehicles registered, including 12 buses, one cleaning vehicle, and 45 passenger cars (10 government-owned and 35 privately owned).
The provincial government expects this number to increase to 450 vehicles by 2030. “The launch of Korea’s first commercial green hydrogen sales marks a significant milestone in Jeju’s transition to a hydrogen economy,” said Jin Myeong-gi, deputy governor of Jeju. “We aim to simultaneously achieve carbon neutrality and create jobs for local residents by establishing a hydrogen industry ecosystem that encompasses clean energy production, distribution, and utilization.
” Since last year, Jeju has been producing 600kg of green hydrogen daily at its Haengwon Green Hydrogen Production Base in Gujwa-eup, Jeju City, using power generated from a nearby wind farm. This facility was the first of its kind in South Korea. Ashley Song (ashley@koreabizwire.
