KUALA LUMPUR: Bergson da Silva has rewritten Super League history yet again — and he's not done yet.The Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) forward became the first player in Super League history to score more than 30 goals in a single season after firing five past Kelantan Darul Naim in a 9-0 demolition at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Thursday."I don't feel anything new, but I'm thrilled.

I'm very proud to have created history here," said Da Silva"I have one more opportunity, one more Super League match (against Kuching City on April 16), then we have the Malaysia Cup final. I will push myself to help the team and be a good teammate to my friends."The Brazilian, who arrived in Malaysia in 2021, scored 31 goals in the 2024-2025 Super League season, eclipsing his previous record of 29 goals set in 2022.

The 34-year-old is also closing in on Indra Putra Mahayuddin's all-time Super League scoring record of 106 goals — with Da Silva now on 104."I've been here for a while. When I first came, I never expected to reach this moment.

But now it's a reality, and I will push myself to be the best player I can be," said Da Silva. At the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Da Silva wasted no time getting on the scoresheet, netting in the eighth, 20th, 24th, 27th and 37th minutes — all before half-time.Romel Morales added a brace in the second half (55th, 58th), followed by Shahrul Saad (63rd) and Safiq Rahim, who scored his first of the season shortly after replacing Jese Rodriguez in the 81st minute.

JDT, which was already crowned league champions in February, are now focusing on their final fixture against Kuching City. This game could see Da Silva match or surpass Indra Putra's record and claim another historic milestone.JDT coach Hector Bidoglio hailed Da Silva's extraordinary achievement.

"He is a top professional — always hungry for goals, always working hard for the team."We know he is close to breaking the all-time record, but what makes him special is that his priority is always the team's success."JDT, who have 67 goals, have now scored 88 goals while conceding just eight this season.

Kelantan, meanwhile, remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just seven points from 22 matches.© New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd.
