Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has high expectations for new Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim ahead of his first game in charge of the club. Amorim was appointed United manager the same week as Erik ten Hag was sacked by Ineos. However, an agreement with the Lisbon club meant he did not leave Sporting to start his new role at Old Trafford until November 11.

As such, the Portuguese has had two weeks of uninterrupted time to settle in and become acquainted with the United squad before leading them at Ipswich Town on Sunday. Following a historically poor start to the Premier League season, the Reds will be hoping for an immediate change in fortunes and Carragher believes that Amorim could be the man to do just that. "That is why Ruben Amorim’s introduction as Manchester United manager is the most eagerly anticipated Premier League debut in years. "I cannot wait to see United take on Ipswich Town on Sunday afternoon because we are about to witness one of the most radical mid-season changes in formation and strategy ever imposed by one of the elite clubs. Facing the side fourth from bottom might seem a gentle introduction to English football for Amorim but my suspicion is it will be much trickier than many think.

"Amorim’s introduction of the 3-4-3 that was so successful at Sporting Lisbon means United’s players will be adapting to an entirely new approach. Longer-term, we can expect a significant improvement in results and performances. "Short-term, it is natural to expect teething problems.

" After the trip to Portman Road, Amorim will be welcomed to Old Trafford for the first time in the Europa League as Bodo/Glimt visit. His first Premier League match at the Theatre of Dreams is at home to Everton a week on Sunday. Try MUFC Pro NOW for free Subscribe to our brilliant app for the best way to enjoy the M.
