Birth: May 17, 1948 Death: April 11, 2025 Loved husband, father, grandfather and brother Lowell It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of beloved husband, father, grandfather, and sibling James ‘Jim’ Barrows. Born on May 17, 1948, Jim left us on April 11, 2025, after fighting a courageous battle with heart disease. His family would like to thank the staff at Lowell General Hospital Main Campus for their kindness and compassion while caring for Jim.
He was well known as a loving, sensitive, and grateful man with an unwavering devotion to his Catholic faith, family and friends. Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ann Louise Barrows, and his daughters, Victoria Kenny and Kate Barrows. He is also remembered by his son-in-law James Kenny, and his grandchildren Samuel, Hawkin, and Bridget Kenny.
His memory will also continue to be celebrated by his older sisters, Judie Scofield and Donna Bowman who have always lovingly referred to him as “Jimmy” due to him being the youngest of eight children. He is predeceased by his parents, Marie and John Barrows, his brother, John Barrows Jr., and his sisters, Joan Leeman, Marylou Shields, Alyce Day, and Elizabeth Downey.
Jim was an ardent fan of his three grandchildren and would be at their sporting and musical events to cheer them on. Jim was an avid reader who often spent his free time enjoying a good book and would share with others. His favorite place to unwind was Cape Cod where he and his grandchildren grew up.
He cherished his time spent there and loved to show his grandsons where all his “old stomping grounds” were. Green was his favorite color, and he had a large shamrock on his car displaying his pride of being Irish every day. He often told people that he believed to be related to Brian Boru, a former king of Ireland.
Jim believed strongly in supporting the Sisters of the Precious Blood Monastery in Manchester, NH and he conveyed this passion through frequent visits with his wife and homemade “Annie” meals for the cloistered nuns. He shared his philosophy that volunteering was the best cure for depression and was living proof of this wisdom. Today, his legacy of gratitude as the key to happiness continues to inspire those who knew him.
An accomplished public speaker, he garnered several awards for his powerful oratory skills which led him to great success throughout his career of in-home sales. Jim’s lifelong friendship of over 54 years with Bob Ahern is truly remarkable. Bob not only introduced Jim to many significant life experiences at Salem State University and re-named him “Jimsy”, but he also introduced him to the love of his life and soulmate, Annie.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 10th, 2025 at 1100 @ St. Rita’s Parish 158 Mammoth Rd, Lowell MA 01854. All are welcome to attend.
