Paul emerged victorious at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, securing a unanimous decision against 'Iron' Mike in the early hours of Saturday morning . Despite the win, the performance didn't impress the live audience, leading to many departing before the fight's conclusion after witnessing eight two-minute rounds that lacked excitement. With this victory, Paul advances his professional record to 11-1, having only made his pro debut four years ago.
The YouTuber-turned-boxer has already dispatched several ex- UFC champions in his brief boxing tenure, including Anderson Silva, and Tyron Woodley, among others. After contemplating a hiatus from boxing earlier in the year, 27-year-old Paul is now eager for a championship fight with WBA (Super), WBC, WBO super middleweight champion Canelo, aiming to prove his mettle, reports the Irish Star . He laid out his plans prior to facing Tyson, saying: "It's Canelo.
"Me vs. Canelo at 200lb for the cruiserweight championship of the world is the biggest fight, arguably even bigger than me vs. Tyson, and it makes so much sense.
Canelo is on his way out. He's going to want a payday. "And I want to show the world all the stuff I've been talking about beating Canelo is actually true and I'll have the biggest upset in the history of boxing.
We'll fight to really see who is the face because after this event, I'm going to be claiming it." Canelo, considered one of the greatest boxers globally, boasts an impressive 62-2-2 career record, having triumphed across several weight divisions including light middleweight, middleweight and super middleweight. Now at 34, Canelo continues to compete at a high level, with notable wins against leading fighters such as Gennady Golovkin, Billy Joe Saunders, Amir Khan and Miguel Cotto.
Suffering defeats only from Dmitry Bivol and Floyd Mayweather Jr, and drawing with Jorge Juarez and Golovkin, Canelo's track record remains elite. Paul, meanwhile, is also eyeing an MMA venture following his signing with PFL in 2022. PFL CEO Peter Murray aims to organise his first bout in the coming weeks, saying: "I'm not sure if it's going to be his very next fight in combat sports but he will debut in 2025.
"Look what Jake has proved in boxing; he's an incredible athlete, he's a pro boxer and he's taken on some legit opponents and he has blazed his own trail. He's going to do it the same way in MMA; he's all about being an advocate for athletes and blazing new trails so he's absolutely going to take on MMA and be as focused and dedicated as he is to boxing." Lauded for its star acquisitions such as Paul, Francis Ngannou, and Claressa Shields, the Professional Fighters League (PFL) is rapidly gaining traction in the combat sports arena, aiming to rival the UFC for the title of the premier worldwide MMA promotion.
