Tony Bellew has blasted Jake Paul for sporting "full on punchers gloves" during his win over Mike Tyson. The former YouTube sensation-turned-boxer triumphed against the iconic fighter in Texas recently. Paul had hinted at aiming for a knockout, but ultimately was only able to clinch a win against Mike Tyson, aged 58.
The bout turned out somewhat lopsided, with Tyson barely landing 18 punches against Paul's 78. But ex-WBC cruiserweight champ Bellew reckons Paul's choice of gloves provided him with a significant edge, reports . Taking to Twitter, he blasted: "The gloves Mike has on are looking heavily padded while Jake has on grants which are full on punchers gloves.
There is a huge difference in them gloves and I'm only watching from a bed." Bellew also ripped into the event itself, questioning why it even occurred. He vented: "We are all to blame for this man! We are all talking and watching!" "We have to stop this fool [Paul]! Don't tune into him until he fights someone who is fit healthy and not a grandfather! Any boxing insiders aiding Paul should be ashamed! This is just sad.
" Despite his anger at Paul, Bellew did offer some kudos. The 27 year old revealed post-fight that he had pulled his punches to avoid injuring Tyson. And Bellew is all for that approach, especially factoring in Tyson's years.
He weighed in: "I don't like this stupid idiot kid but I will say this...
he stopped beating on Mike there and showed him some respect and dignity by letting him survive. He didn't go for the KO there, he stepped off him and let him be." In the post-fight fall-out, Tyson and Paul copped suspensions.
With the bout given the green light as a pro event, the authorities at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, who were running the show, have slapped both fighters with a stint on the sidelines. By the book, each boxer has to lay low for three days per round punched which clocks in at 24 days benched for the pair. Despite this, both brawlers are already trumpeting their next ring wars.
Paul fancies his chances against Canelo Alvarez, while Tyson has thrown down the gauntlet to brother Logan for a scrap..
