Pune: The Chatushrungi police on Friday arrested a 45-year-old doctor from Jaipur in Rajasthan on the charge of duping a Baner-based dermatologist and two others by luring them to invest Rs 1.71 crore in a cryptocurrency between 2022 and 2024. Police produced the doctor, Mohit Mukesh Nagar (45), before a magisterial court, which ordered his custodial remand till April 2.
Assistant inspector Sachin Karande, in his remand report, said the dermatologist and the doctor have known each other since they both are from Jaipur. The accused used to visit the clinic of the skin specialist at Baner for treatment, during which he became befriended him and lured him and his friends to invest in cryptocurrency with a promise of better returns. Karande said the dermatologist and two others collectively invested Rs 1.
71 crore in the cryptocurrency, but Nagar failed to give them the promised returns. An FIR relating to cheating was registered on Feb 2, 2025, after the dermatologist and others realised they were tricked. The Chatushrungi police, in coordination with the Rajasthan police, worked on certain clues and took Nagar into custody from his hideout in Jaipur on March 27.
He was produced before the chief judicial magistrate court, which ordered his transit remand to Pune till March 29. Earlier, Karande produced Nagar in the court of judicial magistrate first class Amol Shinde on March 28 and filed a remand report seeking 10 days of custodial remand. Assistant public prosecutor Vishal Murlikar submitted before the court that the custodial interrogation of the accused was essential to recover Rs 1.
71 crore invested in cryptocurrency, to collect details of the financial transactions and to recover his laptop and mobile phone. The prosecution pleaded to give sufficient time to police to conduct investigations because the accused was on the run since the fraud came to light.
