Given the Asia Series hasn't been played since, that means Murphy's still a reigning champion. He's returning to the capital to take over as manager of the reigning ABL champions when they defend their second Claxton Shield next summer. The 36-year-old's currently working as a scout for reigning World Series champions Los Angeles Dodgers at their spring training in Florida.
He'll return to Canberra in late 2025 with his wife and two children. Claxton Shield and Asia Series winner Jack Murphy will return to the Canberra Cavalry as manager next season. Picture by Jeffrey Chan He'll have big cleats to fill, taking over from Jim Bennett, who led the Cavalry to their second Claxton Shield last month.
But Murphy's set his sights on bringing more success to the capital. "I'm extremely grateful to be part of the Cavalry organisation once again," he said. "I look forward to continuing the winning culture in Canberra and bringing more success to the club.
" Murphy played a massive role in the success of the Cavalry, especially in 2013 - when they backed up their first ever Claxton Shield with victory in Taiwan later that year. The Cavalry go into next summer as reigning ABL champions. Picture ABL Media The former catcher was crucial in getting them to the Asia Series final, hitting a two-run home run to win the semi-final in the 10 th inning before hitting a grand slam to help seal a massive upset victory in the final.
Cavalry co-owner Paul Kelly said it was an easy decision to bring Murphy back. "When we were looking for a new manager, Jack's excitement of having the opportunity to return to the Cavalry was something that made his appointment fairly easy," Kelly said. "Jack had a great career when in Canberra and everyone loved him, so the combination of his history, great personality, baseball knowledge and connections will be a great asset as we enter next season as defending champions.
