PADANG BESAR: The opening of Jabil's semiconductor manufacturing plant in the Chuping Valley Industrial Area (CVIA) is set to elevate Perlis' economic growth to new heights.Operated by the US-based tech giant, this plant represents a significant milestone for the state as the first foreign direct investment (FDI) venture to establish operations in Perlis.The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, expressed confidence that Jabil's presence would pave the way for increased domestic and international investments, positioning Perlis as a burgeoning hub for the manufacturing sector.
"This event is not merely the opening of a new facility; it marks the beginning of a new chapter in Perlis' economic development. This factory stands as a remarkable achievement, being the first foreign manufacturing investment established within CVIA. "As the pioneer investor, Jabil opens the door for more opportunities and investments in this rapidly developing industrial hub.
We deeply appreciate the confidence and trust placed in Perlis with the establishment of this plant," His Majesty said in his royal address during the official opening ceremony.The event was attended by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, and his son, Syed Sirajuddin Areeb Putra Jamalullail. Also present were Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli, Jabil's executive vice-president (Operations) Frederic McCoy, Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) chief executive Mohamad Haris Kader Sultan, and members of the Perlis state executive council.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin recounted that the journey leading to the plant's opening began in 2018, when the state government approved the land for development."The policy framework, designed with foresight by the State Economic Planning Division, laid the foundation for this transformative project. This effort was further supported by the NCIA, which played a key role in developing CVIA.
"From the beginning, there was strong collaboration between the state government, NCIA, MRCB, and Jabil. Construction of the plant began in 2022, and I am pleased to witness the successful completion of this project last year, reflecting the collaborative spirit of all involved parties. "The state government, through the Economic Planning Division, together with the Federal Government via NCIA, closely monitored the progress to ensure the project met the highest standards and contributed significantly to Perlis' economic advancement," His Majesty added.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin marked the launch by signing a commemorative plaque, which was witnessed by Tuanku Syed Faizuddin and Mohd Shukri.The Chuping facility expands Jabil's network in Malaysia, which includes plants in Batu Kawan, two facilities in Bayan Baru, Penang, as well as sites in Sungai Petani and Kulim, Kedah.© New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd.
