Following a $75,000 fine for using hand gestures interpreted as gun-related, Morant took a creative turn with a fresh celebration that mimics tossing a grenade and covering his ears as the crowd shouts "boom." On Thursday, Morant repeated the move at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves at FedExForum, and the Memphis crowd was fully on board. “It’s my celebration now until somebody else got a problem with it, and I’ll find another one,” Morant said during the team’s shootaround earlier that day. “He has a history that maybe he should leave the celebrations where people might die alone,” Kenny Smith said during the Inside the NBA halftime show.
Charles Barkley added, “I know one person’s happy right now—Taylor Jenkins ain’t got to deal with this crap. He’s going to get another job.” Interestingly, the grenade toss appeared shortly after former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas joked that Morant should use a grenade as a safer alternative to his gun gesture.
