The 1% Club viewers were left up in arms as one poor contestant went home with absolutely nothing, after a last minute loss of £100,000.

Viewers of The 1% Club were left screaming at their screens after one player narrowly missed out on the chance to be the show's "first ever" winner of a prize pot containing the maximum possible amount of £100,000. Comedian Lee Mack returned to host the popular ITV quiz on Saturday night (April 5). The programme begins with 100 contestants who face a series of increasingly challenging logic-based questions.

The first question is one that 90% of those surveyed could answer, but by the last question, only 1% can get it right. However, tonight's contestant, Steve, was thwarted at the last hurdle as he opted to shun a guaranteed £10,000 and tried his luck at a tougher question instead for ten times the money. Each incorrect answer by a contestant adds £1,000 to the prize pot - and a lot of fails saw Steve ready to hit the jackpot when he became the only player of the episode to reach the final.

Lee commented it was "quite unusual" for the entire £100,000 to have been accumulated, before offering him the chance to take £10,000 home straight away or risk going away with nothing to pursue an amount ten times higher. "If you do [the latter], you'll be the first ever person on the show to win the full £100,000," Lee told him, adding: "No one has ever done that before!" Steve tried his luck but was totally stumped by the question, which read: "What two letters replace the question marks? TE times T equals MESSAGE, TO times IN equals POISON, E times ?? equals LEAVE." Viewers had their hearts in their mouths as crunch time came - and were left cursing at their screens in sheer disappointment as he incorrectly guessed the letters N and E.

Lee gently revealed the bad news, and explained the missing letters were actually I and T. He explained: "If you replace 'times' with 'X' you form words with the same meaning as the words on the right," making the three words read "Text, Toxin and Exit." Some fans found it easy and took to Twitter to share their triumphs.

"Wahoooo I saw it right away!" wrote one, while another declared: "I am in the 1% club tonight! #The1PercentClub." One viewer mused: "Can’t believe I got the 1% question right but not the 25% or 10% ones," while someone else exclaimed: "Out on 10% but got the 5% and 1% right straight away #The1PercentClub." Others sympathised with Steve, groaning: "Oooooh nasty.

Steve was very brave to go for that, but it ends in defeat. No winners this week." Someone else quipped: "ITV must be thrilled with all they saved tonight!".
