Directed by Kabir Khan, 83 is a sports drama based on India’s first-ever Cricket World Cup win under the captaincy of Kapil Dev in 1983. Harrdy Sandhu, best known for his hit Punjabi songs, made his Bollywood acting debut with Kabir Khan’s sports drama 83. The film, led by Ranveer Singh, is based on India’s first-ever Cricket World Cup win under the captaincy of Kapil Dev in 1983.
Harrdy played the role of former cricketer Madan Lal and was praised for his performance. In a recent interview with Lallantop, Harrdy shared how the role unexpectedly came to him. “I hadn’t even approached them.
That film...
this is also something that happened to me. I’m talking about ’83. I felt like it was made for me," he said.
Before entering the world of music and acting, Harrdy had played cricket professionally for ten years. That experience ended up playing a big part in his selection. He recalled how while in Chandigarh for just a day, he got a call from his friend Ammy Virk who was also part of the film.
“He said, ‘Paji, where are you?’ I said, ‘I’m at home.’ He said, ‘Come down to the restaurant,’" Harrdy recalled. At the restaurant, he met Kabir Khan and former cricketer Balwinder Singh Sandhu who trained the cast.
They asked him if he could recreate Madan Lal’s bowling action. Harrdy replied, “Sir, action is my job. I’ll do it.
" He later sent them a clip of himself performing the bowling action. But days passed with no response. “I thought maybe they didn’t like it," he said.
Then, after ten days, he got a call. “They called me and asked how I did the action scene, they were shocked," the singer said. “I told them it’s my job, sir, please tell me more about the story and role," he replied to them.
He was called to Mumbai soon after to hear the story. Once he listened to the full narration, he knew this was something he wanted to be part of and described it as a “lifetime experience." “One thing that stands out is when we shot the scene where we were given the ’83 World Cup.
It was the original World Cup, and everyone was emotional. Everyone was thanking Kabir sir, for taking us in the film at that moment. People were crying, for real.
.. It was a very historical moment," he concluded.
Alongside the above-mentioned actors, the film also stars Deepika Padukone, Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Jiiva, Saqib Saleem, Jatin Sarna, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, Nishant Dahiya, Sahil Khattar, Adinath Kothare, Dhairya Karwa and R Badree..
