It was a mixed-results weekend for the Union men's hockey team — Final Horn

I’ve had a few days to contemplate the Union men’s hockey weekend. We did have a lot of outstanding high school state championship coverage over the weekend that needed to get into the paper, so that allowed me to take...

The Garnet Chargers dominated from the opening faceoff to the final buzzer. There was no let up. They held the Saints to 19 shots on goal.

Except for two shots that hit the post in a five-second span early in the third period, Union didn’t give St. Lawrence very many quality scoring opportunities, which made goalie Kyle Chauvette’s night easy. The Union men's hockey team dominated St.

Lawrence in a 4-0 ECAC Hockey win on Friday at Messa Rink. Garnet Chargers forwards Caden Villegas and Carter Korpi and goalie Kyle Chauvette talk about the game. “I was really pleased with [the effort],” Union head coach Josh Hauge said.

“I thought our attention to detail was much better. Our habits were great. Kyle was outstanding in the net when we needed him.

“For us, we really focused on trying to get back to who we were. We got away from that a little bit, and I thought it was a great bounce-back game from us.” “I think we had good attention to detail all game,” Chauvette said.

The Union men's hockey team dominated St. Lawrence in a 4-0 ECAC Hockey win on Friday at Messa Rink. Garnet Chargers head coach Josh Hauge talks about the game.

After getting pulled midway through the first period of the Nov. 9 game against Alaska Fairbanks after allowing three goals, Chauvette had a nice bounce-back game against the Saints. He seemed to play more aggressively than he did the previous game.

“He definitely controlled his rebounds very well,” Hauge said. “I don't claim to know exactly what him and Coach Mac [goalie coach Bryan MacDonald] do, but ..

. we have a ton of faith in him.” When I asked Chauvette if he was more aggressive than normal, he said, “I don't know if I'd say that.

I didn't really change much structurally. I just think sometimes bounces don't go the way you want to. And I think I just kind of stuck to the process, stuck to what I'd been knowing for years, so I didn't really change much up in my game.

” Korpi, the Union junior forward who was one of the nation’s top shorthanded goal scorers last year with three, scored his second one of this season late in the third period to give Union a 3-0 lead. “I like being in that position” said Korpi, who is tied with five other players in the country with his two shorties. “I think it's a big opportunity for our team to get momentum, whether it's a blocked shot, a clear or just not allowing a goal.

” But honestly, the goal should never have counted. Union defenseman Nick Young cleared the puck out of his zone and was looking to bounce it off the boards in front of the Union bench. But the puck hit Ben Muthersbaugh and landed on the ice in front of the bench.

The Saints players on the ice pointed to the Union bench to say the puck hit off of Muthersbaugh. But none of the four officials blew their whistle. Korpi corralled the puck, skating down the right wing and fired a wrister off the post and past Saints goalie Mason Kucenski.

After the game, Saints coach Brent Brekke said he couldn’t ask for a video review because the play didn't happen in the offensive zone. Hauge agreed that the goal shouldn’t have counted. “Whatever zone the challenge is, as soon as that puck leaves, it's not reviewable anymore,” Hauge said.

“So, a lucky break for us there.” The Clarkson's men's hockey team skated to a 4-1 ECAC Hockey victory over Union on Saturday at Messa Rink. Garnet Chargers head coach Josh Hauge talks about the game.

The two Clarkson goals that stood out to me were its first and fourth goals. The Golden Knights won races to negate icing calls. Hauge agreed with the second one, but not the first.

He thought his team won the race to the puck. “We got to keep playing, even though the call is missed,” Hauge said. I’ll be honest, it was tough to tell on the first one.

It happened at the other end of the ice, and it appeared to me that it was a tie. The Clarkson's men's hockey team skated to a 4-1 ECAC Hockey victory over Union on Saturday at Messa Rink. Garnet Chargers defensemen Cullen Ferguson and DJ Hart talk about the game.

It didn’t hurt them in Friday’s game, but it did Saturday. In fact, Union had a 5-on-3 for the first two minutes of the five-minute major. Ellis Rickwood was called for a two-minute minor for boarding, Talon Sigurdson got a five-minute major for cross-checking.

It’s not like the Garnet Chargers didn’t have chances. They fired seven shots on goal. But goalie Ethan Langenegger thwarted their chances.

“Our power play has been playing extremely well, and they've been helping us get some wins,” Hauge said. “This is a chance where it's 5-on-3, [and] you're almost expecting them to score. We just didn't get enough [shots] to the net.

” Union still received some votes in the USCHO.com and USA Hockey/The Rink Live college hockey polls. The Garnet Chargers earned 16 points in the USCHO.

com poll, fourth-most among other teams receiving votes. In the USA Hockey/The Rink Live poll, Union got nine points, fifth-most among other teams receiving votes. Four ECACH teams are in the polls.

Cornell is eighth in USHCO.com , and seventh in USA Hockey. Dartmouth is 16th in USHCO.

com , and 15th in USA Hockey. Quinnipiac is 18th in both polls, and Clarkson is 19th in both polls. After having this past weekend off, the Union women’s hockey team returns to action for a non-conference game against Vermont at 6 p.

m. Wednesday at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vermont. The Garnet Chargers (3-3-0 ECACH, 10 points, 5-9-0 overall) last played on Nov.
