New Delhi: The Income Tax Department recently conducted search and seizure operations on Delhi Police personnel after discovering fraudulent refund claims . The police chief issued an order directing officers to refrain from making such claims. According to the order, several Delhi Police personnel falsely reported deductions or failed to provide supporting documents for tax deductions.

A letter from the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation) was sent to the Delhi Police Commissioner, highlighting that several police personnel had made wrongful refund claims by showing bogus deductions, which is prohibited under tax laws and could lead to penal consequences. The order noted that the Income Tax Department had conducted searches on individuals who admitted to facilitating false refunds without proper documentation. Additionally, the officer urged police personnel be made aware of the importance of filing accurate returns, declaring true income and deductions, and the option to file revised Income Tax Returns (ITR) before the specified deadline.

The letter further requested that, given the seriousness of the matter, "all police personnel under the Commissioner's jurisdiction be sensitised against fraudulent refund claims". The letter also instructed police personnel to file revised ITRs and pay any outstanding taxes before the deadline to avoid inquiry or penal action. On Jan 3, an order was issued from the police headquarters to all district police officials and deputy commissioners of police (DCPs), stressing the need to comply with tax regulations.

The directive emphasised the importance of accurate reporting and refraining from claiming wrongful refunds..
