DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip — An Israeli airstrike flattened a multistory building in central Gaza, killing at least 25 people and wounding dozens more, according to Palestinian medical officials, after strikes Thursday across the Gaza Strip killed at least 28 others. The latest deadly strike hit the urban Nuseirat refugee camp just hours after U.S.
President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, told reporters in Jerusalem that the recent ceasefire in Lebanon helped clear the way for a potential deal to end the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. Officials at two hospitals in the Gaza Strip, al-Awda Hospital in the north and al-Aqsa Hospital in central Gaza, reported they received 25 bodies from an Israeli strike on a multistory residential building in the urban Nuseirat refugee camp. Palestinian medics also reported more than 40 people, most of them children, received treatment at the two hospitals.
The al-Aqsa Hospital said the Israeli attack also damaged several nearby houses in Nuseirat. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military on the deadly strike. The war erupted with Hamas’ Oct.
7, 2023, cross-border attack, in which militants killed about 1,200 people in Israel and took 250 others hostage. Israel’s retaliatory offensive in Gaza has killed nearly 45,000 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza health officials, caused widespread displacement and led to severe hunger across the territory. Top U.
S. officials were in the region Thursday, advocating for stability in Syria and an end to Israel’s 14-month war in the Gaza Strip in a last-ditch diplomatic push by the outgoing Biden administration before President-elect Donald Trump takes office next month. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in Jordan and Turkey for talks on how to ensure a peaceful transition of power in Syria after the ouster of longtime President Bashar Assad, while Sullivan was in Israel in a bid to wrap up a ceasefire with Hamas militants.
A ceasefire would give Biden a final diplomatic win after a turbulent term. Trump demanded the immediate release of Israeli hostages, threatening on social media that otherwise there would be “HELL TO PAY,” and urged the U.S.
not to get involved in Syria, where about 900 troops are based to combat the Islamic State militant group. Get local news delivered to your inbox!.
