Social media is filled with videos of crowded hospitals overwhelmed due to increases cases of HMPV virus, influenza and more Published: January 3, 2025 9:20 AM IST By Social media is currently brimming with alarming videos where several people can be seen wearing masks and crowding hospitals. Several users on social media have claimed that there is an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in the country. Not just HMPV, but few posts also suggest that cases of influenza A, mycoplasma pneumoniae, Covid-19 have been reported leaving hospitals and cemeteries in crisis.

Is China Facing New Epidemic? After the Covid-19 pandemic, the world was shattered,and brought to a standstill that affected everyone in one way or another. Some are still grappling with the long aftermath that has changed their lives. Any sign of virus outbreak brings in a sense of fear of the unknown.



If social media reports are to be believed, people in China are in a state of panic. However, there has been no official confirmation made either by China’s Health Authorities or the World Health Organisation (WHO). The veracity or credibility of the videos surfacing the internet is unsupported at the moment.

It may lead to further respiratory issues. Older adults, children and people with relatively low immunity are at higher risk of contracting the virus. This may progress to bronchitis or pneumonia as well.

According to Centre of Disease Control, HMPV is contagious and may spread from infected people. Droplets or secretion from coughing, sneezing, clos contact, touching infected people or objects can spread the virus. Maintaining proper hygiene, washing hands, avoiding close contact with infected inidividuals, avoiding touching eyes, nose etc are basic preventive measures one may take to lower risk of developing any virus.
