A Kirklees councillor has vowed to fight for local lollipop people as she claims their roles have been threatened by Kirklees Council. A petition launched by Dewsbury West’s Independent councillors, Cllr Tanisha Bramwell and Cllr Ammar Anwar, states that Kirklees Council recently wrote to several lollipop men and women, explaining that their roles would no longer be funded. They say another letter has since been sent out saying that the positions will be funded ‘for the time being’.
It adds: “This means funding for these jobs could stop any day”. The petition continues by highlighting the vital role one lollipop lady, who is located at St Joseph’s School, Dewsbury, does in her community. It says: “People like Diane Farrow are not only lollipop ladies, they are a part of our community, they greet children every morning and evening and advise parents, they keep our children safe and are irreplaceable.
“Therefore we the undersigned totally oppose the council's plans to cut funding for these vital roles.” Councillor Bramwell added: “My message to Kirklees Council is simple. If you attempt to cut roles like Diane’s, we will fight for her.
Losing Diane will risk lives including children’s. Diane, we need you and you have our full support.” Kirklees Council was contacted for comment.
