Hozier and Fontaines DC have been named among some of former US president Barack Obama’s favourite songs of the year. The 44th US President releases his favourite songs, movies and books annually on social media — with Favourite by Dublin rock band Fontaines DC, who released their album Romance to critical acclaim, and Too Sweet by Wicklow man Hozier being among his favourites. ‘Here are my favorite songs from this year!’ Mr Obama wrote.

‘Check them out if you’re looking to shake up your playlist – and let me know if there’s a song or artist I should make sure to listen to.’ Here are my favorite songs from this year! twitter.com/MK51Z77uEb It was a banner year for Irish music this year — with Romance by Fontaines picking up two Grammy nods for Best Rock Album and Best Alternative Music performance for their song Starburster. Hozier also enjoyed a successful year following the release of his third album Unreal Unearth last year — with Too Sweet becoming a massive single from his Unheard EP, which consists of five songs that didn’t make the final tracklist from Unreal Unearth.

He’s also set to play Saturday Night Live tonight (December 21) as a musical guest, with the episode being hosted by comedy legend Martin Short. It was also a great day for the literary parish this year — as Sally Rooney’s latest book Intermezzo made Mr Obama’s favourite book list for 2024 alongside Jonathan Haidt, Martin MacInnes and Alexei Navalny. Intermezzo was one of the most anticipated book releases of 2024 following Ms Rooney’s critically acclaimed Normal People and Conversations with Friends, both of which were adapted for the screen; with Normal People launching the careers of Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar Jones.
