Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer sizzled his way into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and is set to be a part of Punjab Kings. He became the most expensive player in the history of IPL, surpassing Mitchell Starc's record of Rs 24.75 crore.
Iyer, who is the 2024 IPL winning captain, was sold for a whopping price of Rs 26.75 crore, with Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders also a part of the bidding war for the batsman. Iyer had a base price of Rs 2 crore.
The battle started off with KKR wanting their captain back and DC also in race to have a homecoming for Iyer. It was Punjab Kings, who joined the war later and continued to go tight against Delhi till the very end only to get their desired player. In a surprising turn of events, Shreyas Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to victory in the 2024 IPL, was released from the franchise ahead of the mega auction in Saudi Arabia.
This marks a historic moment as Iyer is the first IPL-winning captain to be let go by his team in the following season. Shreyas Iyer's career stats in IPL reflect his consistency and impact as a middle-order batsman. Over 115 matches, he has scored 3,127 runs at an impressive average of 32.
24 and a strike rate of 127.48, showcasing his ability to balance stability and aggression. With a career-best score of 96, Iyer has hit 21 half-centuries, underlining his knack for building significant innings.

The decision was reportedly influenced by perceptions that Iyer, along with Ishan Kishan, prioritized the IPL over domestic competitions.
