As reported by The Information, Apple is utilizing an Indian facility to transform the iPhone 17 prototype design into a model suitable for mass production.
This initiative specifically pertains to the initial manufacturing tests for the standard iPhone 17, whereas the NPI for the iPhone 17 Pro models continues to be conducted in China. The base model, referred to by the code name V57, is less intricate than its Pro counterparts. Nevertheless, this marks a significant milestone as it is the first instance of iPhone manufacturing design being partially developed outside of China.
The work is reportedly being conducted primarily at a Foxconn facility located in Bangalore. In 2024, Apple has expanded its presence in India by establishing new offices in the city. The manufacturing tests for the iPhone 17 involve experimentation with various materials and production techniques.
Typically, this process occurs between October of one year and May of the following year; however, it appears to have commenced earlier this time. This early start is attributed to the fact that the iPhone 17 design has already successfully passed the proto-1 stage, during which thousands of devices are produced to assess build quality. Engineers from both Apple and Foxconn, including those from India, are reportedly engaged in these tests.

The relocation of iPhone 17 testing to India aligns with a previous report from December 2023, which indicated that iPad development has shifted to Vietnam.
