Sullivan joined Iowa as a spring transfer from Northwestern during the 2024 offseason and entered the regular season as the backup to Cade McNamara. The former three-star prospect started three games, including the 2024 Music City Bowl against Missouri, following an injury to McNamara in week eight. Sullivan completed 71.

7% of his pass attempts for 475 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions. He also added 150 rushing yards and four touchdowns in 47 attempts. With Sullivan's departure, walk-on Jackson Stratton, who started two games as an injury replacement for Sullivan last season, is the only remaining quarterback from the 2024 season.

In the offseason, the Hawkeyes brought in Auburn transfer Hank Brown and South Dakota State transfer Mark Gronowski in addition to freshman signee Jimmy Sullivan. Iowa transfer quarterback Mark Gronowski camped at Western Michigan during Tim Lester's head coaching tenure with the Broncos and faced the Hawkeyes during his South Dakota State career. Joey VanWetzinga announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal and depart the Iowa football program as an early enrollee on Thursday.

Despite an offseason surgery, Iowa transfer quarterback Mark Gronowski hit the ground running early in his Hawkeye tenure with an eye towards replicating his FCS success in the Big Ten.
