Int'l fest on India Dance begins in Delhi

First International Festival on Indian Dance, featuring various dance forms and fostering discussions on the globalization of Indian art, begins

A glimpse from day 1 of International Festival on Indian Dance Dancer Sonal Mansingh performed Natya Katha-Meera at the Kamani Auditorium today. Over 700 attendees gave a standing ovation to the 80-year-old legend for her captivating performance. Dr.

Mansingh’s Meera Act portrays the life of the poet-saint Meera Bai, focusing on her unwavering love and devotion to Lord Krishna. The story highlights how Meera followed her heart, defying societal expectations and traditions to stay true to her devotion. Sonal Mansingh and Shovana Narayan The evening also featured a performance by the Kerala Kalamandalam group, presenting Kathakali.



Their act depicted the inner struggle of Arjuna on the battlefield and how Lord Krishna guided him to overcome his doubts. The performance emphasized the importance of following one’s swadharma (duty) with courage and faith, even when facing emotional challenges. The event is part of the first International Festival on Indian Dance, hosted by the Sangeet Natak Akademi .

This festival brings together artists, scholars, and students to celebrate and explore the diversity of Indian dance forms. The fest is hosted by the Sangeet Natak Akademi The six-day festival was inaugurated yesterday by Gajendra Singh Shekhawat , Minister of Culture and Tourism. Each day will feature five sessions focused on discussions around the sustainability and globalization of Indian art forms.

More than 200 artists, scholars, and panelists from around the world are participating in the festival. The insights from these discussions are expected to shape recommendations for government policies that will support and benefit the artist and dance communities in India. ‘Prakriti’ by Mamata Shankar Dance Company , West Bengal, ‘Kuchipudi Dance’ by Shantha Ratii, Singapore, and Ramayana Dance-Drama by Taksu Art, Indonesia, will be performed at the Kamani Auditorium today.
