Netflix released a new true crime documentary with viewers being left "heartbroken." Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer premiered on the streaming platform on Monday, March 31. The three part documentary series follows the Gilgo Beach serial killings, told from the perspective of loved ones and victims.

Rex Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 on allegations of being the "Long Island Serial Killer" and subsequently faced charges for murdering seven sex workers over a period exceeding ten years. Rex was initially charged with first and second-degree murder for the 2009 and 2010 slaying of Melissa Barthelemey, Amber Costello, and Megan Waterman in July 2023. A year later, he was charged with the murder of Maureen Brainard Barnes, and the four women became known as the "Gilgo Four.

" Viewers at home were waiting patiently for the premiere and have binged the three part series. One person on X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote: "There is a new documentary on Netflix called Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer. It is insane.

Heartbreaking. Insane." Another person posted: "Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer on Netflix is just heartbreaking.

Sex workers are treated so horribly already but it’s sad how it reflects even in death and danger. These women were murdered and their families had to wait years for it to be truly treated as such. Awful!" Director Liz Garbus spoke to The New York Post and opened up about reaching out the families.

She said: "When I learned he was arrested, I was honestly just shocked. I was relieved." Liz continued: "I reached out to the family members [of victims] who, for the first time in so long, had some hope of getting more answers and justice in this case.

" Rex pleaded not guilty to the crimes and a trial date has yet been set. Liz said: "I think that there were many in law enforcement who wanted to do right on this case, who felt maligned in the media in general. Because they felt that there was a lot of blame going on the police force.
