Mumbai: An IndiGo flight from Mumbai was forced to make an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar's Chikalthana Airport on Sunday night after an elderly woman passed away mid-air, according to Indian media reports. The plane was en route to Varanasi when it made an emergency landing in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. The passenger, identified as 89-year-old Sushila Devi from Mirzapur, reportedly began feeling unwell shortly after flight 6E-5028 took off from Mumbai on April 6th.
As her condition deteriorated, the flight crew declared a medical emergency and requested a priority landing at the nearest airport. According to multiple reports, the aircraft landed at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar around 10:00 PM local time. An emergency response team and medical personnel rushed to attend to the passenger upon landing.
However, despite immediate medical attention, the woman was pronounced dead onboard. In a statement released on Monday, IndiGo confirmed the incident: "Flight 6E-5028, flying from Mumbai to Varanasi, was diverted to Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) on April 6, as a result of a medical emergency onboard. Despite immediate medical care, the passenger's condition did not get better and was pronounced dead onboard.
" Following the incident, the local MIDC CIDCO police station was notified, and necessary formalities were conducted at the airport. The body of the deceased has been sent to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for post-mortem examination and documentation. After the completion of all legal procedures, the IndiGo flight continued its journey to Varanasi.
The airline stated that it adhered to all standard operating procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers and staff on board. IndiGo also expressed its condolences and stated that they are in constant communication with the family of the deceased, providing them with all necessary support and assistance. Airport officials confirmed that all other passengers were safe and that the emergency situation was handled according to the established protocols.
