East Bengal’s wait for its maiden Indian Women’s League (IWL) title was extended after the side drew 1-1 with Sribhumi FC at the Bibhutibushan Stadium in Barrackpore, West Bengal, on Saturday. Anju Tamang gave table-topper the lead in the 82nd minute but Sandra Atinga equalised just six minutes later. This match left East Bengal top of the standings with 31 points from 12 matches.

On the other hand, the Kolkata-side’s closest title challenger in Gokulam Kerala, was trailing 0-2 against relegation-battling Kickstart FC at the time of writing. If East Bengal had held on to the lead, and Gokulam lost, then it would have been crowned champion with two games to go. Now, the Anthony Andrews-coached side will need a win against defending champion Odisha FC to clinch its IWL title with a game in hand.
